Diabetes can affect anyone but it is largely known to be hereditary. Diabetes occurs when the blood sugar glucose level become too high due to the body not being able to burn carbohydrates sufficiently as a result of a problem with the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ that naturally produces insulin. Insulin is a hormone whose function is to maintain a normal blood sugar level within the body. Living with diabetes is not the end of the world, but it does require the sufferer to adhere to a strict diet and exercise regime.
The normal blood sugar level is between 70 150mg. Blood sugar levels are usually at their lowest in the mornings, and will fluctuate throughout the day, increasing after meals. Diabetes is also known to occur during pregnancy, known as gestational diabetes, and is also common amongst those who are overweight. Diabetes also occurs in two types. type 1 and type 2. Type 1 tends to occur almost at once, and is due to the body killing the cells that are there to produce insulin in the pancreas. With this type of diabetes, a person is known to be insulin dependent, as insulin injections will have to be taken for life. Type 2 occurs over years and may go unnoticed for quite some time before being diagnosed. It is a result of the body not producing enough insulin and is the more common of the two.
Symptoms of diabetes include lethargy, thirst, weight loss and excess urination. Diagnosis is made by carrying out a random glucose test in the blood. Although it has not been clinically proven that you can prevent getting diabetes, it is recommended that we eat a healthy diet that is low in sugar, exercise regularly and lose weight if you are already obese.
It has been observed strangely that changing global atmosphere and standard of living and way of living in modern human beings, has brought out a drastic change in disease pattern, a bright example of such a finding is that, diabetes, which was once considered to be a disease of the old, is no longer considered the same. People of younger generation, and even teenagers are progressively getting affected with the disease, and that has rang off the alarm bell among the health scientist. That suggests that people of all age should keep this threat seriously.
