Mental Illness, the Challenge and the Stigma of It
The achievement of a long-term cure of a hysterical personality disorder is a formidable task since it requires the patient to mature emotionally. Not surprisingly both patients and their doctors often tacitly agree not to attempt it. Instead, the doctor may concentrate upon dealing with the most pressing difficulties of the patient's immediate predicament and may settle for her remaining a somewhat demanding and dependent patient.
In that case, the goal for each consultation can be to ensure that the patient departs calmer and with more self-esteem than when she arrived. The doctor helps the patient discover some modifiable aspect in a problem which she had considered insoluble. Mental illness is an enigma. It is everywhere all the time and we don't recognize it. Only you can decide which type of action you want to take for the health of your child.
